Two Gals Spending The Day Downtown

Two Gals Spending The Day Downtown

Recently I met up with one of my closest friends for a day of downtown fun. Our experience began at Tremont Street's Thinking Cup coffee shop, where we indulged in coffee and sweet rolls. Strolling up Tremont Street, we turned down Bromfield Street, with its charming old storefronts.

We then ducked into the back entrance of the Jewelers Building, where we found a repair shop for some cherished old earrings of my mom's. I couldn't resist picking up an exquisite new strand of cultured pearls.

Exiting the front of the Jewelers Building, we turned left onto Washington Street--the bustling heart of downtown--to explore Old State House and Old South Meeting House. The two Revolutionary-era museums, just blocks apart from each other, were the site of unforgettable historic events: the Boston Massacre (Old State House), and the launch point for the Boston Tea Party (Old South Meeting House).

Continuing with the historic theme, we headed up School Street for lunch at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. The restaurant is set inside Boston's Old City Hall, an amazingly restored building dating to the Civil War era. Heading back to Tremont Street, we stopped in at Suffolk University Law School.

After having taken in so much culture, we shifted gears to go shopping. We doubled-back to Washington Street and went into Macy's, downtown's anchor retailer and a great destination for any kind of shopper.

With the day waning, we had just a little more shopping to do: a trip to West Street's iconic Brattle Book Store, a treasure trove of thousands of vintage and out-of-print titles. Sure enough, we found exactly the old book we wanted.

Hungry again, we walked across the street to the downtown's latest new restaurant, the Back Deck. We capped off the day by taking in a movie at the AMC Loews Boston Common cinema--just down the street from where we began at Thinking Cup.

All in all, it was a great day for two pals having some fun together and enjoying everything downtown has to offer.
