Boston’s Exchange District proposal, an 18-acre swath of land situated in the heart of Downtown’s historic Financial District, moved one step closer to realization recently, when the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) voted to forward the vision to the National Park Service for final review. The proposed Exchange District contains numerous Victorian-era mercantile gems, including 45 Milk Street, 1 Water Street, and Congress Square, along with the Art Deco masterpiece that is the McCormack Federal Courthouse (5 Post Office Square).
With the establishment of the Exchange District, property owners within its boundaries will be able to unlock important redevelopment incentives in the form of the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Tax Credit as well as the Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit.
In a Downtown rich with spectacularly redeveloped historic landmarks, including the restored Burnham Building, Modern Theatre, Opera House, and Paramount Center, the Exchange District promises an exciting new chapter for our neighborhood via additional transformative redevelopments!
